Applied Neurology
What is Applied Neurology?
Applied neurology is a functional, brain-first approach that directly targets the nervous system to optimize body function, physical movement, balance, and pain relief.
Instead of just treating local muscles or joints, we target the “boss” of your body: your brain. Your brain acts like a high-powered computer that constantly scans data from three primary sensory systems:
The Visual System: How your eyes track and perceive your environment.
The Vestibular System: Your inner ear, which regulates balance, posture, and spatial awareness.
The Proprioceptive System: Your body’s internal 3D map, which senses joint position and movement in space.
When your brain receives clear, high-quality data from all three systems, it feels completely safe. Safe means maximum strength, full flexibility, and zero pain.
However, if that incoming data is fuzzy or confusing, your brain hits the alarm button. This protective alert is what you feel as stiffness, weakness, or chronic pain. It is essentially your brain pulling the emergency brake to protect you from a perceived threat. Our goal is to assess these systems and assign targeted drills to drop that threat and release the emergency brake.
Who Can Benefit?
Because everyone has a nervous system, almost anyone can benefit from applied neurology. It is highly effective if you experience:
Past Physical Trauma: Previous injuries, surgeries, or concussions.
Persistent Performance Barriers: Chronic pain, stubborn limitations in range of motion, balance issues, or coordination difficulties.
Low Vitality: Feeling physically clumsy, chronically fatigued, or simply “not yourself.”
Athletic Goals: Originally engineered for elite athletes to hone performance, this system is ideal for anyone looking to up their physical game.
What Does a Session Involve?
During your applied neurology visit, you can expect a comprehensive assessment designed to discover exactly how your nervous system is interacting with your muscles, joints, and senses. Unlike a traditional massage therapy session, you will be fully clothed, and it is best to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
We will start with a deep-dive conversation about your health history, current symptoms, and daily habits; then we’ll look at your overall goals for assessments and drills. With simple, non-invasive tests we will check: Visual tracking: Seeing how smoothly your eyes move and focus. Vestibular function: Checking in on your balance and inner ear system. Sensory reception: Assessing how your skin and joints register light touch or vibration. We will try targeted drills—like specific eye movements, breathing exercises, or mobility tracks—to see how your nervous system responds on the spot and how your body reacts. You will leave with a personalized series of simple, daily brain-based exercises designed to gently rewire your nervous system and accelerate your progress at home.
Every session centres on rapid, interactive testing. We evaluate your baseline movement, apply a specialized sensory drill (such as precise eye-tracking or a unique balance sequence), and immediately re-test your movement.
If your brain likes the drill, it drops the threat, releases the emergency brake, and you will see an immediate upgrade in your strength and mobility. You will leave each session with a highly customized, minimal dose of daily homework drills. As your brain integrates this new data over a 3-to-6-week cycle, your drills will progress to unlock further layers of improvement.
How Fast Does It Work?
Neurological changes happen in seconds. When a drill gives the brain the clarity it wants, it immediately removes its protective alarms, releasing muscle tension and reducing pain on the spot.
However, the brain treats these initial breakthroughs like a temporary software patch. To make these changes permanent, you must leverage neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to forge new neural pathways—by practicing your drills consistently at home.
The Commitment: You must commit to doing your custom drills 2 to 3 times daily (up to 5 minutes per session).
The Timeline of Results
Weeks 1–3 (Daily Practice): Clients typically report subtle, compounding shifts like deeper sleep quality, sharper mental focus, and expanding “windows” of time where chronic pain or movement restrictions completely disappear.
Months 1–3 (Consistent Training): The brain officially rewires. It stops default-firing its old protective alarm patterns (like chronic pain or protective muscle guarding). This is the phase where structural changes take root, making your newfound mobility, stability, and pain relief stable and automatic.
